The Overture Awards is a program that recognizes, encourages and rewards excellence in the arts among tri-state students, grades 9-12. Its mission is to encourage arts education as an integral part of a student’s academic experience and to create an environment that encourages training in, and appreciation of, the arts. The Overture Awards Scholarship Competition is the area’s largest solo arts competition and offers scholarships in six artistic disciplines: creative writing, dance, instrumental music, theater, visual art, and vocal music. For the 2020 competition, students may win a $4,000 scholarship (one awarded in each discipline) or a $1000 finalist scholarship (a total of 18 awarded). Judges at all levels of the competition are drawn from the professional arts community. Learn more about this year's competition at www.cincinnatiarts.org/education-community/overture-awards.
Since our vocal and musical theater students first began entering the competition in 1998, Musical Arts Center-trained students have placed in the finals (guaranteed scholarship) EVERY SINGLE YEAR, many of those years including multiple finalists, overall winners, or both.
Thank you to our amazing faculty and our talented students for their hard work and dedication!

MAC Overture Statistics
For frame of reference, every year hundreds of students from the tri-state area's schools and music programs compete in the Overture Awards Scholarship Competition. There is a regional, semi-final, and final competition round. There are 4 finalists in each category, and from the finalist pool, 1 student is selected as the Grand Prize Winner. The numbers below are based off of Theater and Vocal Music competitors.
- MAC Students have entered the competition every year in Theater or Vocal Music since 1998 (25 years!), and every year at least one of those students have made it to the final round of competition
- There has been only 1 year where we had ONLY 1 finalist
- This means that we have had AT LEAST one scholarship winner every year, averaging 3 out of 8 finalists per year
- There have been 9 years where at least HALF of the Theater and Vocal Music finalists have been MAC Students
- To date, we have had 82 students make it to the finals
- There has been only 1 year where we had ONLY 1 finalist
- If the prize money was the same every year (Grand Prize: $4,000, Finalist Prize: $1,000), MAC students have won almost $147,000 in this competition alone!
- 21 Grand Prize Winners have been MAC Students
- There have been 5 years where MAC Students won Grand Prizes in BOTH Theater and Vocal Music
- Since the competition began, half of all Vocal Music Grand Prize Winners have been MAC Students
